Karl Campbell for Wired

Karl Campbell, project director of Island Conservation, photographed at the Sutro Baths in San Francisco for Wired Magazine. I’ve wanted to shoot a commission at this location for years now, and was so glad to finally have reason to shoot some portraits here.

Campbell works in the Galapagos, and is on the forefront of terminating the islands invasive species through ‘gene drives’, which introduce genetically modified organisms designed to spread a chosen trait, such as producing infertile offspring in the islands invasive rodent species, throughout a wild population. Such systems could conceivably be used on islands as large as New Zealand, which recently announced its intention to rid itself of invasive species by 2050. It is also quite controversial. You can read more on the Wired website. Thanks to Amy Silverman for the terrific assignment.
