Laurel Halo: Chance of Rain
Laurel Halo is my favorite composer and musician. She is a genius, she makes powerful music, music that is vivid and viceral, music that cloaks and envelops you, makes you feel aggressive or insightful or potent. I love all of her albums, they are all vastly different. She is a shape-shifter; I feel like each album is representative of her relationship to sound and composition as she explores electronic and classical music. I would suggest starting with her album “Quarantine” before listening to Chance of Rain. Sometimes people write about her music with this swagger of “oh, it’s so hard to get into, it’s really unpleasant and harsh”, which is a shame. It’s just complex. No earworms here, just albums to play over and over again, transported slightly further into a new space every time.
