On Rates

A bit on rates:

Every once in a while I get an email that is asking about hiring me for photo/video services, and it’s usually something along the lines of “we need photography what is your day rate”, which is a bit like going to a contractor and saying “hey I want a house, how much will it cost to build a house?”.

Folks. What kind of house do you want? Do you want a shed or a mansion? 1 BR or 5? Is it cantilevered off the side of a hill or 4 basic walls on a flat surface? The amount of work and expertise and time wildly varies based off these parameters. Which ultimately determines how much it costs to build that house.

These are all the details you need to come to a photographer/videographer or their rep. I wrote more about it below. Basically, be specific, think about what you want. It’s fine to have a photographer/videographer guide you through how she/he operates, but it’s really really really best and most helpful to define what you need, and start the conversation there.
